Road Trip

This past weekend Grant took his first road trip to Napoleon. Jared and Jill were coming to meet Grant for the first time on Saturday and Sunday was Cain's 3rd birthday. Grant did great in the car! He slept the entire way there and didn't realize he was starving until we got him out of the seat. We spent most of the day at Grandma and Grandpa R's house visiting with Uncle Jared, Jill and the Great Aunts. Jared and Jill (PE teachers) got Grant the cutest little Nike and Addidas warm up outfits and Air Jordan booties. Good thing we got the booties because I forgot to pack socks. I thought I did so well bringing lots of extra outfits and remembering everything he needed. Grant managed to pee all of his clothes (and I brought lots of extras!) and I forgot the socks. Next time I'll know to bring even more clothes and I won't forget socks.

Sunday was Cain's birthday party. He was pretty funny tearing through his presents and throwing any clothes out of the way. Grant got to meet Great Grandma and Grandpa and Cain's cousin Jake. Jake was born 2 weeks before Grant. In this picture I think Jake weighs 11 pounds and Grant weighs 7. It will be fun to compare the two and for Grant to have someone his age to play with when they get bigger.

I like books!

Before Grant was born I bought the book Black and White by Tana Hoban. One side is Black on White and the other is White on Black. It's accordian style so it will stand up on its own. It is so cute to watch Grant look at the pictures. I'm disappointed when he's done looking because I just love to watch him. We started showing him the book soon after he came home and it's amazing to see him really look at the pictures. We like to pretend that his favorite is the black cat. :)

Goin to the Dr

We went to the doctor today for Grant's 2 week check up. He's back up to 7 pounds and measured 20 3/4 inches. Did he really grow 2 inches in 2 weeks? That does seem to support the theory he was incorrectly measured at the hospital. I feel better now that he's gaining back some weight. He's actually starting to fill out his clothes. Hopefully some of his other clothes will fit soon so he can stop wearing the same 5 outfits over and over (and mommy and daddy can stop doing laundry every other day!).

Grant Weis Rathge

Born February 11, 2008 at 7:20 am.

7 pounds 2 ounces,

19 inches long*

*Troy strongly disagrees with this measurement. Grant does look longer, and almost eveyone comments on how long he is, but I measured him at the hospital with a tape measure I found in a drawer and I got between 19 and 20, so 19 inches is pretty close.

The Nursery

Here are a couple shots of our polka dot themed nursery. Can you find Miles hiding under the crib?

R Family Fartlek?

When we were trying to think of names for this blog, Troy came up with the above suggestion. Is fartlek even a real word? Yes, and apparently runners know what it means. Here are a couple definitions:

"Fartlek is a Swedish term that means 'speed play' or playing with speed. It is a very natural way of running that can be closely associated with children running around during playtime."

And

"A training technique, used esp. among runners, consisting of bursts of intense effort loosely alternating with less strenuous activity."

Troy thought it was appropriate because it's similar to the experience of raising kids, plus Uncle Adam (among others, I'm sure) would love for little Grant to be a runner like his dad. To give you an idea of what kind of pressure litte Grant is seeing already, uncle Adam has been calling him "Pre" pretty much since day one. For those of you who don't know who "Pre" is see Steve Prefontaine. Adam even got Grant a little "Go Pre" t-shirt and "Stop Pre" bib for Christmas. No pressure, Grant. :)

Anyway, back on topic, Fartlek. No one else even knows what fartlek means, plus it starts with fart, so I had to veto it. R Family Story it is. :)
